Work-Related Amputations

94.6% of occupational amputations involve the hand. Approximately 90% of these amputations involve the fingers. These injuries most commonly occur in mining and manufacturing industries and workers who operate moving machinery or power hand tools.

Research shows that:

• 20% of workers cannot return to the job they performed before the injury.
• Traumatic amputations are twice as likely to occur on Saturday or Sunday as on a weekday.
• Amputations occur more frequently in males than in females, at a rate of 4:1.
